More Happy Holidays

Okay, this post is from me. I sincerely wish all of you peace and happiness this holiday season. It has been a tough year for many of us. Please remember, the holidays are not about the gifts but about friends and family, good health, and hopefully a job and a warm home. The library is also the spot for warmth, friends and good cheer...as well as resources for job searches, resume building and a killer health information section! We are here for you...well, except for the fact we are closed on Dec. 24 and 25.

And I am sure you are all busy cooking and preparing for the onslaught of family and friends. Me too! If you have been reading this for awhile, you must know I have finally overcome a paralyzing fear of raw chicken. I have been slicing and dicing that raw stuff for months now and I must admit, I am quite proud of myself but I almost regressed last night...but I didn't. I found this great pate recipe in Bon Appetit (of course). At 1:00 am this morning, I opened that container of chicken livers. Ooooh boy. That nearly sent me running! But I talked myself through it and chopped up those bloody livers and made quite a tasty treat. I hope my guests think so..but don't tell Pete what is in the pate. I just told him it was chicken...no need to elaborate.

Again, happy holidays to all from everyone at the Library! Enjoy what you have and who you are with! And let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.....(sorry, I love winter!)

Euphoria Indeed!

Attention bread lovers! Check out this link that I heard advertised on NPR...www.breadeuphoria.org Bread Euphoria appears to be quite the artisan bread and pastry shop, using many local ingredients. I was drooling just cruising the website! It's just past Northampton on Rte.9. Stop your groaning, it's not that far! Many of you drive to Whole Foods anyway...just keep on going!

(And just to somehow make this post library-related)...remember your local library has a great collection of bread making books, many by renowned baker and author Peter Reinhart (who came to the library a few years ago for those that remember!) His books not only instruct but are a beautiful work of art just to look at. We also have a dvd from King Arthur Flour (another great company!) titled "The Baker's Forum: Artisan Breads". You know, as I am typing this I remembered I already had a post praising Peter Reinhart. I hate to repeat but he's worth it! You can check out his blog at http://peterreinhart.typepad.com/

Warning: Don't take up bread making until after the holidays. It is addictive and you won't want to do anything else!

A new book just on the shelf, "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running: A Memoir" by Haruki Murakami and "Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner" by Dean Karnazes. I will admit, they were inspiring but I still have yet to run that marathon! What will it take???? Grief Support Event

The Monson Free Library is the site of a FREE screening of the movie Motherland on Tuesday, December 16th at 5:30pm. Rowan Tree Foundation is proud to be a supporting sponsor of this documentary's preview in support of Grief Awareness Week December 15-21. Motherland tells the story of six diverse American women that came together in December of 2006 to journey to rural South Africa as volunteers working with poor children. Strangers to each other before this journey, these women shared one life-changing experience in common: each had suffered the death of a child.

This event is being held in support of Grief Awareness Week December 15-21. Rowan Tree Foundation is a non-profit organization providing support to families that have suffered a prenatal or infant loss. During this very special week, we are honored to come together to recognize and comfort our friends, relatives and neighbors who are grieving, and to surround them with compassionate support during the holiday season – one of the most challenging times of the year for those who have lost a loved one. There will be a brief introduction of the film by Sandra Courtney, RTF Board Member, with the screening to begin at 6:00pm. Ms. Courtney is one of the original Board Members of the Rowan Foundation, and has found offering support to families to be a large part of her healing, following the death of her infant son Ryan in January 2004, from complications of Trisomy 18.

This event is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served. The movie will be shown in the DeSantis Room at the Monson Free Library, 2 High Street, Monson. For more information or to register online: http://www.rowantreefoundation.org/, or call Sandra at 413-267-0490.
