New Year's Resolutions

I am not one to make New Year's Resolutions. They are broken almost immediately. So, here at the library, instead of doing our annual "Resolution" display for January, highlighting all those diet and exercise books, how to stop smoking, how to find love, blah, blah, blah....we decided to create a display featuring all those books you have always wanted to read but haven't gotten around to yet. Let these books be your resolution! To inspire you, each of the staff has their own section filled with titles they have always wanted to read. (There's not enough room in my section!) I urge you to stop by and take a look or simply ponder what titles you have always wanted to read. And let us know what you resolve to read in 2010!

Currently I am reading two extremely different memoirs. The Night of the Gun by David Carr and My Life in France by Julia Child with Alex Prud'homme. Both are wonderful reads. The Night of the Gun traces the addictions of journalist David Carr. Now clean and sober, Carr interviews former friends, girlfriends, criminals, and assorted acquaintances to help piece together the life he used to live. His research attempts to find the balance between reality and memory. Blessed with an incredible vocabulary and love of writing, Carr tells his story with honesty. He's a great writer and that is what makes this addict's story stand out in a crowded genre.

And then there's Julia. What can I say. Her voice is so distinct and clear in this book that it is like she is reading it to me, or just having a conversation and telling me her story. This book charms the reader with food and wine and all things French! Simply delightful!

Finally, I don't think I shared with you that I recently spent 4 days in NYC! Pete had a sales meeting so I took full advantage of a free hotel room! Ran in Central Park, how I love the Park! Visited the Whitney to view the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit. Incredibly inspiring! Had the best massage of my life, shopped til I dropped, met a friend for dinner at Esca, and experienced fine dining at Seasonal Weinbar, a small, quality Austrian restaurant. It had received starred reviews in New York Magazine and I have been dying to try it. While Pete was out with the boys at Famous Dave's (can you believe it!?), I went and had a stellar dining experience. Just let me mention the appetizer...a poached egg covered in loberster biscque, surrounded by pieces of lobster and topped with shaved pumpernickel bread. Odd? Oh no. Phenomenal!!

On that note I will bid you goodnight. I can't top that. I am out of words and dreaming of good food.
